In December 1988 a committee from SOS-Børnebyerne, Denmark, visited Iceland on their own initiative and established a preliminary board. Mrs. Ulla Magnússon was appointed as chairperson with the task to evaluate the possibilities for running a formal SOS Children's Village organisation in the country. The outcome of that evaluation was positive and until the year 1992 the Icelandic committee operated with close links to the Danish SOS Children's Village organisation and for many years on a voluntary basis. In 1992 the Icelandic organisation, SOS Barnaþorpin, became a full member of SOS-Kinderdorf International and has operated as an independent supporting association under own statutes according to Icelandic laws and regulations ever since.
SOS Iceland is very strong on the sponsorship sector and has been able to recruit a comparably high number of sponsors from Iceland (taking into consideration that Iceland counts with a population of only 300,000 inhabitants). Besides many smaller projects the first facility to be financed and run is a family house in the first SOS Children's Village being built in Brovary, Ukraine.
SOS Iceland does not run any SOS Children's Villages or other SOS facilities in Iceland.
